After coming home from the hospital it is normal for some babies to still lose some weight that first week. Most newborns will need to be seen 2-3 days after discharge from the hospital. On your last day in the hospital your doctor will tell you when your new baby’s first visit to the office should be. Call as soon as possible to schedule this appointment, preferably the day you go home from the hospital.
At that first visit in the office your doctor will see if the baby is having any typical newborn issues such as problems with feeding, elimination, or jaundice. There are usually no immunizations due at this 3-5 day old visit nor are there any at the 2 week check up. Often the the newborn hearing screen from the hospital needs to be repeated because of fluid in the infant's ears from birth. This simple screen can be repeated in our office during one of these first office visits without a separate appointment.
